Portugal NIF validator
How the NIF format works
- Format
- PT + 9 digits
- Example
- PT123456789
Things to watch for
- Same 9-digit number as the national NIF tax ID
- This tool checks the format only; the Portuguese check digit is not yet validated
^PT[0-9]{9}$Portugal’s VAT number is “PT” plus 9 digits, and those 9 digits are the business’s NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) — the same fiscal ID system Portugal uses for individuals, sole traders, and non-residents alike, not a code reserved for VAT-registered companies. A Portuguese NIF shows up on property purchases, mobile-phone contracts, and personal tax returns just as often as on VAT invoices.
That breadth is the quirk worth knowing: because everyone in Portugal’s tax system has a NIF, having one doesn’t by itself confirm VAT registration. A private individual and a VAT-registered company can both hold a perfectly valid 9-digit NIF; the “PT” prefix and VAT-registered status are a separate fact layered on top of the number itself.
Format validation, explained
This validator confirms the “PT” prefix and counts exactly 9 digits, entirely in your browser, with no signup and nothing sent to a server. It’s a length-and-prefix check — Portugal’s official NIF check-digit formula isn’t calculated here, so a pass confirms shape, not the checksum.
Outside this check’s reach
A correctly shaped NIF doesn’t confirm VAT registration or that the number is currently active for VAT purposes. Confirm through the EU’s VIES lookup or Portugal’s Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (Tax and Customs Authority) before relying on it commercially.
Scope: NIF/VAT format only — not check-digit validation or VAT registration status.

NIF FAQ
Is a Portuguese NIF only for businesses?
No — Portugal's NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a single national tax-ID system used by individuals, sole traders, companies, and even non-residents opening a bank account. The VAT number for a business is that same 9-digit NIF with 'PT' in front.
Why does the same NIF show up on things that aren't VAT invoices?
Because NIF isn't a VAT-only code — it's Portugal's general fiscal identifier, used for tax returns, property registrations, and everyday transactions like signing a phone contract, not just intra-EU VAT invoicing.
Does a correctly formatted NIF mean a business is VAT-registered?
No — every resident and company gets a NIF regardless of VAT status. A format pass here only confirms the shape; confirm actual VAT registration through the EU's VIES lookup or Portugal's Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira.
