Things to watch for

  • This tool checks the format only; no check-digit validation is performed
Regex for Közösségi adószám
^HU[0-9]{8}$

Hungary’s EU-facing VAT number, the közösségi adószám, is deliberately shorter than the country’s full domestic tax ID. The complete Hungarian adószám runs 11 characters — an 8-digit core (törzsszám), a check digit, and a 2-digit code identifying the tax office or county — but only that first 8-digit core travels onto an EU invoice, prefixed with “HU”: HU12345678.

That truncation is worth knowing if you’re cross-referencing a Hungarian invoice against a company’s domestic paperwork: the longer number with hyphens and extra digits isn’t a different registration, it’s the same business’s fuller domestic ID, issued by NAV (Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal), with the VAT-relevant core extracted for EU trade.

What gets checked

This validator confirms the “HU” prefix and counts exactly 8 digits, entirely in your browser, with no signup and nothing sent to a server. It checks shape only — the underlying törzsszám’s own check-digit formula, which NAV uses domestically, isn’t run here.

What’s not checked

A pass means the 8-digit core is correctly formatted, not that it corresponds to a currently active VAT registration. Confirm live status through the EU’s VIES lookup or NAV directly before treating it as verified.

Scope: közösségi adószám format only — not the full domestic adószám, check-digit validation, or registration status.

Közösségi adószám FAQ

Is the Hungarian VAT number the full domestic tax number?

No — Hungary's domestic adószám is 11 characters (8 digits, a check digit, and a 2-digit county/office code), but only the first 8 digits, with 'HU' in front, appear on the EU-facing VAT number.

Why does my Hungarian VAT number look shorter than the tax number on the invoice?

Because it is shorter, by design — the EU VAT number (közösségi adószám) uses just the 8-digit core (törzsszám) of the longer domestic number, dropping the county code and extra check digit that aren't needed for cross-border VAT purposes.

Does this tool check the Hungarian check digit?

No — it confirms the 'HU' prefix and the 8-digit count only. NAV's official check-digit calculation on the törzsszám isn't validated here.
