How the ДДС номер (VAT number) format works

Format
BG + 9 or 10 digits
Example
BG123456789

Things to watch for

  • Length varies — 9 digits for companies, 10 for individuals
  • This tool checks the format only; the Bulgarian check digit is not yet validated
Regex for ДДС номер (VAT number)
^BG[0-9]{9,10}$

Bulgaria calls its VAT number a ДДС номер — “BG” followed by either 9 or 10 digits, with the length itself carrying meaning. A registered company’s number usually runs 9 digits (BG123456789); an individual or sole trader registered for VAT typically carries 10, built from their Unified Civil Number. Anyone invoicing across the EU or checking a Bulgarian supplier before a B2B transaction needs to get that digit count right.

Because both lengths are legitimately valid, it’s easy to assume a 9-digit number is incomplete when checking it against a 10-digit example, or vice versa. Bulgaria’s National Revenue Agency (NRA) issues both forms depending on how the taxpayer is registered, so neither length is the “wrong” one — the number simply reflects a different registration type.

How the check works

This tool confirms the “BG” prefix and counts the digits that follow, accepting either 9 or 10 as valid — entirely in your browser, with no signup and nothing transmitted anywhere. It’s a structural check: Bulgaria’s official check-digit formula (which differs between the company and individual formats) isn’t calculated here yet.

What it doesn’t verify

A pass confirms shape, not an active registration. Bulgarian VAT numbers can be deregistered or reissued, so treat a format pass as a starting point, not proof — verify current status through the EU’s VIES lookup or Bulgaria’s NRA before relying on it commercially.

Scope: format validation only, not VAT registration, thresholds, or filing obligations — none of which a browser-side check can determine.

ДДС номер (VAT number) FAQ

Why do some Bulgarian VAT numbers have 9 digits and others 10?

The length signals who holds the number: registered companies typically carry 9 digits after BG, while individuals and sole traders (using their Unified Civil Number) carry 10. Both lengths are valid — it depends on the entity type.

What does ДДС номер actually stand for?

It's short for danak dobavena stoynost nomer — VAT number in Bulgarian, written with the Cyrillic ДДС. On EU paperwork and invoices, it's always shown in Latin script as BG plus the digits.

Does a correct-looking BG number mean it's registered with the NRA?

No — this validator only checks digit count and the BG prefix. Confirm live registration through Bulgaria's National Revenue Agency (NRA) or the EU's VIES lookup.
